Chapter 101: Xu Wanning Beats Up Li Xian

On the twenty-fifth day of the first lunar month, while the holiday season had not yet officially ended, the ornately carved and painted Zhenguo Duke Manor remained immersed in a festive atmosphere.

Originally planning to depart after the first month, Li Ling decided to change their itinerary and leave early because traveling with his delicate wife meant the journey could not be rushed.

He had already settled matters with his duties at the camp outside, and Jingxiu had likewise arranged all household affairs.

Early in the morning, the couple rose, prepared themselves, and were now only waiting to bid farewell to their family before embarking on their journey.

Over at Baitang Ju, Xu Wanning had also prepared herself early today. Her close and affectionate sister-in-law was leaving on a long journey, and although Xu Wanning was not usually a meticulous person, she had spent considerable effort personally preparing many items that would be useful on the road for her.

Holding her daughter, with the wet nurse leading Kun Ge'er and maids carrying the gifts and luggage, the group was about to set out to see Li Ling and his wife off when a servant announced from outside: "Someone from Chenxi Ge requests an audience."

Hearing it was from there, Xu Wanning's face immediately darkened. In a cold tone, she said, "Send her away. Is my Baitang Ju a place for any demon, fox spirit, or seductress to just walk into?"

Her words had barely fallen when Meiniang sauntered in, swaying with each step. Her face wore a look of seductive contempt, her fine eyebrows slightly raised as she spoke in a mocking, insinuating tone, "Who is the mistress cursing indirectly so early in the morning?"

The announcing matron, seeing she had entered on her own, said angrily, "This old servant had just announced you. The mistress hasn't granted permission yet. How dare you just walk in?"

Meiniang said disdainfully, "This is the First Master's western compound. I am his proper concubine, bestowed by His Majesty himself. Where can't I go?"

Seeing her brazen, disrespectful face, Xu Wanning forcibly suppressed the rage in her heart. She handed the daughter in her arms to the wet nurse and instructed, "Take the children to the side hall and wait for me."

Once the wet nurse had taken the little girl and led Heng Ge'er out, Xu Wanning walked straight up to Meiniang, raised her hand, and with a sharp crack, delivered a stinging slap across her face.

Clutching her face, Meiniang ground her teeth at Xu Wanning. "May I ask, Mistress, what wrong have I committed? How dare you strike me for no reason? I was bestowed upon the First Master by His Majesty himself. Even if I were at fault—"

Mentioning the imperial bestowal only made it worse. It allowed Xu Wanning to vent all her pent-up resentment toward the Emperor onto her as well. Before Meiniang could finish, Xu Wanning raised her hand and delivered another fierce slap.

This blow was struck with Xu Wanning's full strength. After it landed, Meiniang's face swelled up, and a trickle of crimson blood seeped from the corner of her mouth.

Xu Wanning gave a cold laugh, looking down at Meiniang with disdain. "I am the principal wife. I'm hitting you precisely because I can!"

Still not vented, she raised her hand again to strike Meiniang's other cheek.

"Stop!"

However, before this slap could fall, Li Xian rushed in. He stepped forward and caught Xu Wanning's fierce hand, rebuking her, "Are you trying to beat her to death?"

This was precisely the moment Meiniang had been waiting for.

Just then, Little Hong, who had followed Li Xian in, cried out, "Meiniang! Are you alright?"

The moment her words fell, Meiniang's eyes rolled back, and she fainted.

Little Hong wailed, "First Master! First Master! Look quickly! Meiniang has been beaten to death by the mistress!"

Li Xian released his wife and immediately bent down to hold his beloved Meiniang, who had gone limp in a "dead faint" on the floor. Meiniang slowly "came to," burying herself in Li Xian's arms and weeping, "My lord, just send me away now. I know you are soft-hearted, but since the mistress cannot tolerate me, she will surely beat me to death sooner or later."

Seeing his beloved Meiniang's battered and swollen face, Li Xian stood up and pointed at his wife in anger, reproaching her, "I've already agreed to move her outside. Why must you still be so aggressive?"

Seeing her husband still blindly shielding his concubine and blaming her without hearing the full story, Xu Wanning, whose eyes were already red with fury, couldn't be bothered to waste words on Li Xian. She raised her hand and slapped him across the face.

Li Xian was stunned by his wife's sudden blow. When he recovered his senses, he shoved Xu Wanning away, scolding, "Have you gone mad?"

Pushed back two steps by Li Xian, Xu Wanning's lower back hit the corner of a table, causing a sharp pain. Her phoenix eyes widened in fury as she glared angrily at Li Xian. "You actually hit me for this fox spirit?" As she spoke, she lunged at him, and the two began to brawl.

Back at Qingfeng Yuan, Li Ling and Jingxiu, having finished their preparations, had stepped out. They were just about to go to Anxitang to bid farewell to the Old Madam when a maid from Baitang Ju came rushing over in a flurry.

She ran up to Jingxiu, panting, and reported, "Second Mistress, please go take a look quickly! The First Master and the Mistress are fighting!"

Li Ling's handsome brows furrowed slightly. "They were fine. How did they start fighting?"

The little maid replied, "It's all because of that Meiniang again!"

She looked at Jingxiu urgently. "The First Master and the Mistress are grappling with each other. No one dares to pull them apart. Please go take a look quickly!"

Jingxiu had originally thought it was just an argument. Hearing "grappling with each other," she couldn't stay calm.

After all, Xu Wanning was a woman. How could she fight Li Xian?

Hearing that his elder brother and sister-in-law had come to blows over a concubine, Li Ling frowned and said to his wife, "You go ahead. I'll wait for you back here."

Jingxiu hurried off with the little maid to Baitang Ju. Sure enough, she found the two locked in a fight. Tables, chairs, teacups, vases, and all manner of furnishings were scattered across the floor in a complete mess.

Meiniang, who had been crouching on the floor weeping, saw the mistress of the household arrive and quickly got up, throwing herself at Jingxiu's feet and pleading, "Young Mistress, please order them to pull the Mistress away! The First Master is about to be beaten to death by her!"

Jingxiu looked toward the two still fighting. Xu Wanning was fighting with vicious determination this time, putting all her strength into pummeling Li Xian. Although Li Xian was furious at his wife's ferocity, he couldn't very well hit her back. Fortunately, he had the advantage in strength. While dodging his wife's furious punches, he tried to restrain his enraged spouse, all the while shouting incessantly, "Have you gone mad? Stop it! Stop!"

True to her heritage as a general's daughter, Xu Wanning held the upper hand throughout the scuffle with her husband. Her self-styled "Xu-Style Beating-Up-Scum-Husband Fists" were swung with formidable force.

Nanny Qiu, standing nearby, muttered resentfully, "Serves him right!"

Since it wasn't their own young mistress who was at a disadvantage, no wonder no one in the room was trying to break up the fight.

Jingxiu directed the nearby maids, "Hurry and pull your mistress back! What if she gets hurt?"

They couldn't just let the couple keep fighting forever.

Upon their mistress's order, the young maids glanced at Nanny Qiu's expression and then stepped forward to pull Xu Wanning and Li Xian apart.

The maids pulled the two apart with many hands. Xu Wanning, her eyes red with battle fury today, was dragged aside but still shook her fists at Li Xian, hurling threats.

Jingxiu stepped forward to hold her back, persuading, "Sister-in-law, don't fight anymore. What if you get hurt?"

Only then did Xu Wanning notice Jingxiu had arrived. She couldn't very well demonstrate her Beating-Up-Scum-Husband Fists in front of her sister-in-law.

Xu Wanning finally stopped. Panting heavily, she sat down, muttering furiously, "If you hadn't held me back, I would have beaten that wretched pair to death today."
